Background of the study
Online political content plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, particularly in influencing how citizens perceive policy issues and political initiatives. In Port Harcourt, civic initiatives leverage digital content—including articles, videos, and infographics—to inform and influence public discourse (Obi, 2023). This comparative study investigates how different types of online political content affect public opinion formation. It examines the roles of message framing, source credibility, and content quality in determining the persuasiveness of political communication. The study compares diverse content formats and platforms to evaluate their impact on public attitudes toward civic issues (Afolabi, 2024). Furthermore, it considers the potential of online content to bridge or widen ideological divides, assessing whether digital media can foster a more informed and engaged public. Challenges such as misinformation and selective exposure are also explored. Through analysis of case studies from a civic initiative, the study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of how online political content influences public opinion and contributes to democratic engagement (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Civic initiatives in Port Harcourt face difficulties in ensuring that online political content effectively shapes public opinion. Although digital content has the potential to inform and mobilize citizens, issues such as poor message framing, low source credibility, and misinformation hinder its persuasive power (Obi, 2023). Additionally, the varying impact of different content formats makes it challenging to determine which strategies are most effective in influencing public attitudes. This gap in understanding limits the ability of civic initiatives to optimize their digital content for maximum public engagement. Therefore, this study seeks to analyze and compare the influence of various online political content forms on public opinion formation, aiming to identify strategies that can enhance the positive impact of digital communication (Afolabi, 2024).
